New Kent & New Church Rest Area Condition Assessment

PILLAR was hired by the maintenance contractor at these two safety area locations to perform a facility condition assessment and generate a repair list of deficiencies and safety issues prior to said contractor entering into a maintenance contract with VDOT.

Rocky Gap Rest Area ADA Sidewalks

Renovations in 2008 to the Southbound Rest Area and Welcome Center and Northbound I-77 Rest Area in Bland County specified updating the site to current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications. This included the need for compliant parking access isles and pathways to the buildings and a couple picnic shelters.  PILLAR performed topographic and planimetric surveys to obtain existing features and terrain elevations.  We devised a new accessible route that did not require handrails which lead to the welcome center and rest room buildings.  The work entailed moving existing parking spaces and replacing existing curb and sidewalk with compliant widths, slopes and detectable warning strips.  Coordination with VDOT and the Rest Area Maintenance Contractor was crucial in the design phase.
