I-81 Truck Rest Area Sink Hole

Pillar was hired by the contractor who performs maintenance and upkeep of the rest areas for the VDOT Bristol District to design repairs for a sink hole which appeared at the I-81, Exit 14 Truck Rest Area. Excavation found a sink hole underneath a run of storm sewer piping, which had collapsed and was contributing to the subsidence of pavement.  The sink hole was excavated as wide and deep as possible without having to bench or lower equipment into the hole.  It was then chocked with larger rock and layered with progressively smaller diameter aggregate.  The storm sewer pipe was re-laid and the subgrade brought up to subbase level with concrete pavement being repoured level with the surrounding pavement.

I-81 Truck Rest Area Stormwater Basin Repair

Pillar was hired by the Contractor who performs maintenance and upkeep of the rest areas for the VDOT Bristol District to design repairs to the stormwater detention basin at the I-81 Exit 14 Truck Rest Area. The existing basin was not functioning as originally designed and had fallen into disrepair. Sinkholes had formed and erosion had occurred which prohibited the structure for operating as intended. Pillar designed corrective measures to address the causes of its non-functioning. This included topographic survey and location survey of the existing basin.

Long Meadow Road Design

An existing private road, Ferby Lane, within Long Meadows subdivision was re-designed to meet Virginia Department of Transportation standards for acceptance into the secondary road system for maintenance. Surveying services included obtaining existing topographic and planimetric information. VDOT standards included grading, road plan and profile, and a ditch design with stormwater controls and measures. Ferby Lane will serve four lots.

Additionally, an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan and Narrative, as well as a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), were developed. Sight distance verification was performed in conjunction with VDOT for complete sight and stopping distance review and checks for the intersection of Ferby Way and State Route 52.
